The psychoanalytic theory known as Transactional Analysis segments the human personality into three ego states: Parent, Adult, Child. In truly effective communication, you will find that between 30% and 50% of your interactions comes from your Nurturing Parent. People will respond much better to your Nurturing Parent than to any other kind of messaging. When negotiating or communicating in any business situation, you should aim for 70% of the messaging to come from your Nurturing Parent and 30% to come from your Adult track.

Selling to major accounts, also known as enterprise accounts, is radically different from selling in other spaces. For one thing, the major account selling cycle is a continuous process – continuous because there’s no end to the cycle of selling to and serving large accounts. And the streams of transactions over time between buying and selling organizations constitute a client journey with a distinctive itinerary along a clear roadmap, a roadmap that delivers value on an ongoing basis.

Inside salespeople who find themselves behind quota may assign their performance problems to any number of factors beyond their control: the economy, the competition, the weather. But the reality is that the single most common reason for this problem lies in something they do control: their choice to use, or not to use, a cookbook.

There are three big questions when it comes to qualifying a sales prospect. Once answered, your job is not done. You must still perform some “due diligence” before you present.

What can you do to close sales more quickly? If you start with the right people for the right reasons; deal with potential problems in the early stages of the process; rigorously qualify opportunities; and ensure that you and your prospects are on the same page at each stage of the process, you’ll be able to complete the selling process in a shorter period of time ... which in turn means more sales…and more commissions.

Have you ever given a presentation to a prospect who seemed to be showing you nothing but "green lights" ... until you came to the final page of your proposal? If you hold off making a recommendation until after you've qualified the prospect - not only for budget, but for the existence of a problem you can solve and for a mutually workable decision making process - then you'll find your closing ratios rising!

In working with thousands of salespeople and sales managers, a consistent area of concern they have is to improve on their stall and objection handling skills. When prospects say things like “we’re not quite ready,” “your price is too high,” “were staying where we are,” “you do the same thing my current supplier does,” I could go on.

Traditional sales training says present, present, present and close, close, close – convince your prospect with a compelling presentation, show him enough value, and he will surely buy.  When I first got into sales I really sweated the presentations.  I practiced them over and over; used different visual props and brochures; tried a variety of persuasive arguments; and created notebooks full of evidence favoring my product and my company.  Ultimately it became apparent that no matter how exciting or compelling my presentation was, my close rate was mostly dependent on what happened before the presentation, not during it.

Your strategies for interacting with prospects from the time you first meet them to the time you make a presentation can have a greater impact on your likelihood of closing a sale than the actual aspects of the product or service you have to offer.

Has this ever happened to you? During an initial discussion with a prospect, you make it a point to review your pricing information. You put everything right out on the table. The prospect tells you the price you mention “looks fine” (or is “OK,” or “seems fair,” or is “in the ballpark,” or any similar piece of vagueness). The prospect then tells you to put together a couple of samples, designs, or prototypes. You agree, and you get to work.

Fear may be the most powerful motivator affecting your buyers’ decisions. However, in their effort to maintain an image of power and control, buyers will be reluctant to share their true anxieties and concerns with you. You’ll increase your sales production when you help buyers discover and overcome their fears, show that you are sensitive to those issues, and then lead those buyers to the conclusion that your product will replace their fear with peace of mind.

The reasons you give a prospect to buy are rarely the reasons a prospect buys. In fact, a prospect sometimes buys in spite of your reasons. Our reasons for buying are a stock list of features that many times mean nothing to a prospect or they simply don’t care about them.

“Stripping line” is a trick familiar to experienced anglers. They know that they have a better chance of hooking the fish if they create some slack on their line instead of yanking the line at the first nibble. Listen carefully to the way prospects describe their interest in your product or service. When prospects refer to their situation using emotionally-oriented words such as concerned, frustrated, unhappy, alarmed, committed, eager, or determined, it’s an indication that they view their situations with enough importance to address them.
